Credit Unions from across community raising awareness and funds in the fight to end cancer

WHAT: Great Lakes Bay Credit Union Challenge

In its inaugural year in the Great Lake Bay Region, 3 prominent area credit unions will take a stand against cancer by supporting the American Cancer Society through participation in the Great Lakes Bay Credit Union Challenge.  Credit unions participating in the campaign were announced this week, and will kick start their efforts on April 1st to fundraise for the American Cancer Society and raise awareness for cancer through credit union member engagement.

WHEN: April 1, 2017 through June 30, 2017
WHO: Copoco Credit Union, Team One Credit Union, United Financial Credit Union

BACKGROUND: It takes everyone to create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by cancer – both businesses and individuals alike. In an effort to create a unique platform to invite credit unions to show support for this important cause, the American Cancer Society is engaging and empowering community leaders in the fight against cancer through the Great Lakes Bay Credit Union Challenge. Each credit union participating is charged with a fundraising challenge and is collaborating to share the mission of the American Cancer Society, including a focus on connecting cancer patients and caregivers to the American Cancer Society’s free programs and services.

While this campaign is a fundraising initiative, it also provides strong awareness efforts in the local community for the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 by 10 doctors and 5 laypeople in New York City.  The Society’s founders knew they had to raise public awareness about cancer if progress was to be made against this disease.  Thanks in part to the Society’s work, there are nearly 14.5 million people alive in the United States alone who have survived cancer. In fact, more than 500 lives are being saved each day that would have otherwise been lost to cancer. And we won’t rest until we finish the fight against cancer.  Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society ensure no one faces cancer alone by funding innovative cancer research; promoting education and risk reduction; and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.
